Luis Padrón

Luis Padrón Otoreña is a bit of a complicated case, as are most of the 2-way players.

Padrón was a useful batter, and even a borderline full time player at 3B and RF from his late 20s into his mid 30s. He never hit for a high average, but he had some power and great speed, and while he would strike out a ton, he did well enough. Defensively, he was very good at both 3B and RF, and fair to middling elsewhere. 1900 and 1901 were probably his best years offensively, but he had a run from 1908 through 1915 where he was close to a full time position player as well.

It’s an odd mix: homerun power in the deadball era mixed with leaderboard (but not league-leading) level speed.

From a pitcher. Or a part-time pitcher. Or something.

Here’s the thing: Padrón basically blew his arm out as a 21 year old, throwing over 300 innings long before he was ready. His nickname of El Mulo speaks to his build, but he would only top 200 innings once more in his career, 7 years later. But he still had some value, making double digit starts in this projection a dozen times over his career, and seeing decent action from the bullpen.

When he pitched, he was very, very hard to hit and struck out a ton of batters for the time. But he also had virtually no control, giving up 4 walks per 9 innings, a very high number for the era. He would have held down a rotation spot from 1906 to 1909 with some effectiveness, but he was always susceptible to a lot of traffic on the bases.

All of the two-way projections are very sensitive to the assumptions about how often they would play the field and how often they would see action on the mound. It’s clear Padrón was, at least for much of his career, a contributor in both roles, but I could see future projections really changing his allocated playing time while maintaining the overall shape of his performance.
