Eustaquio Pedroso was a classic argument for the two-way player. He was, essentially, league average (or perhaps a shade better than that) both on the mound and at the plate. There is an obvious argument about resource scarcity which then would make him a valuable addition to any MLB roster.

He was solid at the plate, with decent doubles power and the occasional longball. He drew a decent number of walks and was hard to strike out. Never a star, but also never (at least after his initial struggles) someone who would be a hole in the lineup.

The challenge, in some ways, would be whether a team would give him a shot in the field, given how bad he was until age 24. But those years would probably be spent in the minors anyway, so we have extended his on field playing time for his full career, filling in 1925, the only year he doesn’t have a batting record.

On the mound, Bombín had a 6 to 7 year run as a mid rotation innings eater, never great but always valuable. From 1910 to 1914, he would likely be among the league leaders in IP, but also in hits allowed and, a bit further down, walks allowed. There are clear indications of injury, and obvious drops in effectiveness thereafter, then a bit of a rebound which is a little hard to spot in the raw numbers, as it overlaps with the start of the lively ball era.

His control faded a bit as his career progressed and he was never much of a power pitcher. But he got outs, ate innings, and didn’t give up the long ball very often.

He played the field throughout his career; we’ve added some time on the mound for a few seasons in his 1930s, assuming that playing longer seasons would expose moments where he would be summoned to pitch. This also supports his returning to the mound later.

Pedroso spent the first part of his career primarily in RF and the second half at 1B, but saw decent time in LF and CF as well.

I like this projection of Bombín, but think all of the 2-way players could use some further refinement as a better picture of how their playing time might be allocated emerges.
