Far better on the mound than otherwise, Carlos Royer was barely good enough to qualify as a two-way player in our projections.
Let’s start with the good stuff.
Royer was a solid pitcher, a decent option for the middle of a good team’s rotation. Like a lot of pitchers of his time, he carried a heavy workload for the start of his career then a lower one as, presumably, he dealt with the injuries that accompanied those workloads. In the second half of his career, his relief appearances outnumber his starts in most seasons.
He was very hard to hit with decent control (although his walk rate increased over the end of his career) and, in general, a decent strikeout rate. About the only flaw for Royer was a tendency to give up more homeruns (for the era) than you would like.
In the field, Royer was primarily a 1B with a bit of time at 3B and RF. He just wasn’t very good, rarely hitting over .200 (which of course wasn’t as much of a problem in the deadball era as in later decades) and having neither much power nor much control of the strike zone. Essentially, he adds some roster flexibility, but not a ton of other positive impact from his time spent not on the mound.
Royer missed the 1905 season; as is our practice, we have filled that one year in.
Future projections could remove Royer as a 2-way player altogether, or may drop his usage, especially in 1901 and 1902. They also could nudge his pitching performance up slightly–the susceptibility to giving up homeruns may be tweaked a bit given the era, which would also then pull down his projected ERAs. It could also be convinced that he falls off a cliff too fast here, and would have had some years, at least on the mound until around 1912 or 1913.
