Dick “Cannonball” Redding was a workhorse, whose career was punctuated by a couple significant injuries, and then faded significantly towards the end. We’ve ended his career a few years before it happened in reality, as his availability and effectiveness really takes a nosedive in his early 30s.
This projection has him among the league leaders in innings (and therefore in hits) a handful of years, while maintaining better than league average walk rates and striking out batters at a fair clip.
Honestly, there’s not a lot else to say: it would be a surprise if Redding ever won a Cy Young award, but an all star game or three sounds right although a lot of that is team dependent.
Future revisions are likely to make him a bit better–I’m think his control might have been a shade better, and his strikeout rate could be significantly underestimated here. Additionally, as with many of these high-usage hurlers, we could see him getting more innings in future revisions, pushing up his potential for black/gray ink.
This is especially true from 1923 or so on, where I could see an argument of him still being a regular rotation starter for a few additional years, adding as much as 1,000 innings to his career.
