Another meteor of a career, Andrés Ortega looked for all the world like a future star when he debuted as a 20 year old, but his career only lasted 5 seasons.
It’s hard to know exactly why, but there are the usual hints of overuse and injury and, as such, we have preserved Ortega’s very short career.
Whatever the case, he was stunningly difficult to hit, but lacked control in a big way–in a threatening to lead the league in walks in 1906 and 1907 way. Those two things combined to make his overall WHIP good, but not great, but still, he was a high use starter from 1904 through 1907 before lagging a bit in his final season in 1908.
It’s a short career, but a valuable one. And certainly not unprecedented.
Obviously, further research may impact how we assess the end of Ortega’s career.
