I don’t know what to do with José Magriñat.
Somehow, he had a 17 year career historically, playing pretty much full time from his very early 20s into his late 30s. After 2 amazing years to start off his career, he very rarely produced anything offensively. Ah, you say, he must have been really good defensively. Nope, not really, as evidenced both by the numbers and by his drifting from the IF into the OF as time went on.
He had some speed, so there’s that.
So what to do with Quico? We’ve returned to our default stance on careers like this: project them as accurately as we can, and let the simulations determine if he was good enough to hold down a job in MLB. As such, our suspicion is that Magriñat’s career would be shorter than we have it here–it easily could have ended after 1908 and again any year from 1913 on. That said, we don’t have Magriñat ever appearing as a full time player, only eclipsing 300 AB’s three times.
Additionally, we are leaning very hard on his first 2 years, which were very special, and easily the best of his career. Teams will give players many chances to “recapture that level,” before they actually give up on a player.
Beyond those two years, you really have a poor offensive player: no power, no walks, too many strikeouts. He did have a little power, which certainly helped.
Magriñat always played the OF–mostly CF and RF–but also saw some time at 3B and a little at 2B and SS early in his career. He had a decent arm, but became a defensive liability as he got deeper into his 30s.
It’s pretty easy to see Magriñat’s career ending in 1904: at that point, his offensive production has declined every year of his career, with no indication it will recover. I’d be fine with that, but do think our current set, where he manages at most few hundred appearances a year in a reserve role, is also feasible.
