Guy Jackson

Career Batting:.255 BA .327 OBP .357 SLG. 24 HR. 2,570 PA.(1909-1915)

Guy Jackson had some useful years late in his career, but was really a bit of an anomaly for his time: an average fielding 3B whose value lay in his occasional power and his eye for the strike zone.

Jackson has a late debut with really just a cup of coffee in his first year, already in his late 20s. We’ve added a season in 1910, but other than that followed his historical record. That inserted year is really a bridge between a pretty horrific season in 1909 and the first of 3 good years (1911, 1913, and 1914). Those seasons are marked by a high walk rate and, most of all, well above average power, both in terms of doubles and homeruns (Jackson wasn’t fast, reducing the number of triples he produced).

He drew a decent amount of walks, and struck out fairly often.

Primarily a 3B, Jackson was mediocre across the infield, seeing some time at 2B and SS in his career as well. He was decently surehanded, but lacked range at a time where 3B was largely seen as a fielding-first position.

We never see Jackson as a true full time player and don’t project him eclipsing 500 ABs at any point in his career, although he is clearly near full time status from 1912 to 1914. That is the biggest question for future projections: if Jackson warranted another 100 to 150 PA’s a year, he would likely edge onto the HR leaderboards in some seasons.
