Henry Hannon was an erratic, but occasionally useful, spare outfielder.
His career was more mecurial than most, as his good years (1908, 1912, 1914) were quite good and his off years were truly awful. The overall effect of this is a bit muted, as we’ve inserted years for 1910 and 1915 which pull more to the mean.
Still, given that he was never a full time player, it’s pretty easy to see his career ending after 1909. Or 1911. Or 1913. But in each case he bounced back with a reasonable performance, which we see as likely making another team willing to give him a roster spot for a year or two. This variance is, of course, at least partially caused by a scarcity of opportunity: his rookie year is the only season we have projected Hannon getting over 300 PAs.
His offensive profile is thoroughly average–some ability to make contact with the occasional extra-base hit. His walk rate was highly variable, but overall his control of the strike zone was lacking.
Defensively, he was quite good at the corner OF spots, with a strong arm. He played CF as well, but really lacked the range for that position, and he filled in elsewhere (including behind the plate) a small handful of times.
Future projections are likely to reduce his playing time even further. Hannon is emblematic of the type of player whose career is as much a product of luck and opportunity as anything else, and it’s not clear that, in a more competitive landscape for end of roster jobs, he would survive. That is another take on the definition of a AAAA player.
