Wallace Gordon

Wallace Gordon, he of the enviable nickname, Jumping Jack, had some pop in his bat, and parlayed that into a career as a useful OFer and occasional starter, including one year–1910–of true impact.

It’s a little bit of an unusual offensive shape: first, his performance in 1909 and 1910 far outstripped anything else he did in his career, which buoys his career totals somewhat. Outside of those two years, Gordon did not hit very well for average, but did have some pop, consistently delivering extra bases when he did make contact.

He didn’t walk a lot, and struck out more than his share, meaning almost all of his contribution was due to his power numbers, which included homeruns at a better than average clip for his era.

He was solid everywhere with the glove, including a few stints in the middle infield, but his best position was probably RF, where exceptional athleticism made up for a mediocre arm.

We added a year in 1913, but aside from that followed Gordon’s historical arc.

Jumping Jack’s value hinges a lot on how you see 1909 and 1910. We’ve leaned into those being exceptional years for Gordon; if you make those years closer to the rest of his career, you still have a useful player off the bench.
