Gervasio González was a solid backstop, deserving of a long career, although perhaps never being a star. This claim is contra-indicated by his election to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, which needs to be taken into account, especially defensively.
Most of González’ offensive value was in his eye for the strike zone. He did not have much power, but he did have some speed, with an ability to steal bases that was maintained throughout his career.
González’ defensive reputation is far better than his defensive numbers would indicate, which leaves a bit of a conundrum: his offense was above-average, especially for a catcher, but he only becomes a star if his defensive contributions were significant. We have preserved his playing time, keeping him as essentially a first-string catcher for almost all of his career.
Other than not having reach the majors until 1902, we have followed the historical record for González.
Further research could change this: if González lacks defensive value, his overall playing time would drop, further reducing his career impact.
Regardless, we’re happy with this offensive shape, and don’t see it changing significantly.
