Regino García could hit. He belongs in a long lineage in baseball history of backstops who produced offensively, but weren’t all that great defensively (either catching or at other positions), and for whatever the reason, only held down a full time job for a few years. Smoky Burgess, Cliff Johnson, Manny Sanguillén, countless others, we’re looking at you.
García could also run, which is an interesting twist, but it really was his ability to hit for average that kept him in the league–he had some power, but not a ton, but he hit over .290 6 out of 8 years through his peak (remember, this is the 1900s). He was ridiculously hard to strike out.
Mamelo was not a very good fielder, lacking both subtlety in framing pitches and a strong arm. This led to some predictable experiments with him at 1B and RF, neither of which worked out very well.
Still, a valuable piece.
We have been fairly conservative on García’s power numbers and could see him accumulating more doubles and triples in future projections.
