Serafín García

Serafín García could hit a bit, and why his career ended when it did remains a bit of a mystery. Like many players, his career arc makes a lot more sense if his date of birth was actually sometime in the late 1870s, not the recorded 1882. But we go with what he know.

Like many in the 1900s, he had little power, contributing mostly singles, but García did so at a well above respectable rate. His debut in 1902 is impressive and his playing time grows until 1905, when he has an excellent season–easily the best of his career. 1906 is pretty average, 1907 is downright bad and … that’s it. He vanishes from the record at age 24.

He had very little power, really only contributing extra base hits at anything close to league average in 1905, but he did have some speed, perhaps even edging onto the SB leaderboards in 1905.

García struggled with the strike zone, not drawing walks and striking out regularly.

He was decent in the OF early in his career and downright bad later, never having much of an arm and losing range, opening some speculation about injury (which could also explain the early end to his career, of course).

I’m not really sure what to do with García overall. There is a useful player here somewhere, with 1905 being a decent representation. But there’s certainly little star potential, and a lot of his career will shape around opportunity, like so many others. I could see his overall record nudged upwards slightly in future revisions.
