Charles Earle was a solid OFer and a useful 2-way player at the start of his career.
He was a full-time OFer for a decade, with several years–1910 especially–of star quality. He was above average across the board–decent at making contact, decent power, decent at taking a walk, decent speed. We’ve mirrored his historical pattern here, aside from delaying his debut as a position player until 1907 (a year later than his real life rookie season). We do have him on the mound in 1906, and could easily be convinced that he would have gotten a look in the field that year as well, during which he would hit quite poorly.
Defensively, Earle was … you guessed it … decent! His arm was average at best, but he had decent range, and wouldn’t hurt you in CF, although he was probably best in RF.
Earle pitched well in the start of his career, seeing action on the mound over his first 5 years and culminating in a 1908 season where, for the only time, he eclipsed 200 IP. Earle was never dominant on the mound, but he was useful for sure, and it’s not clear why he never pitched after 1911 (although, as always, theoretical arm injuries loom as a likely explanation).
“Frank” is not really Earle’s nickname; rather he is in the historical record as both Charles Earle and Frank Earle, and it took a while for NeL research to confirm these names were indeed used by the same person.
I like this model for Earle, but could see his overall performance edging up slightly across the board. Some MLE’s have him becoming a threat to lead the league in homers, which I think is a vast overstatement of his potential–Earle had decent power for his era, but not beyond that.
