Cristóbal Torriente

Cristóbal Torriente was a magnificent specimen of a baseball player, well deserving of his (long overdue) HoF status.

Not only could he hit–and we have his lifetime OPS edging over .900, which is, even for a career that peaked in the 1920s, elite–but he was a spectacular CF with a strong arm, and was a constant threat on the basepaths. From 1913 (while still a teenager) to 1927, Torriente should have constantly been in the MVP conversation. And, yeah, I know a guy named Ruth was around, too.

He should have been in the running to lead the league in hits a half-dozen times, doubles a few times, triples and walks once or twice, and maybe even SBs a time or two. He would also lead in K’s a few times.

We have Torriente finishing with 3100 hits, 600 doubles, 250 triples, 100 HRs, and 700 SBs. That’s rare air: only Cobb and Wagner are in that exact club.

If that weren’t enough, Torriente was a useful, if never a star level, pitcher. He was dominant as a hitter, but was also good for some mound work each year and, for a few years, was even a useful rotation member. On the mound, his control was suspect, and he gave up a lot of hits, but he was still useful, and that roster flexibility, of course, is pretty valuable.

Historically, Torriente stopped playing in 1928 and then returned for a brief cameo in 1932. This is a bit of a conundrum, as his career ends somewhat suddenly–he’s 34 in 1928, and is still hitting and fielding far above replacement level. In this projection, we’ve ended his time in 1928, but I could easily be convinced that his career would stretch to the early 1930s.

Two other things could change in future revisions of Torriente: first, I’m not thrilled with his power stats here, and could see him having significantly more homeruns than he does here; second, I think he could have been harder to hit as a pitcher, leading to higher usage and even more two-way value.
