Sam Streeter

Sam Streeter was … solid. He was a good pitcher for a long while, never great, although 1922 and 1933 approach greatness, but usually dependable. He was one of the innumerable hurlers who create the notion of league average, and reinforce just how far above replacement value that is.

He’s part of why this project exists: he absolutely belonged in the majors; and he absolutely was not a star, although he certainly could have been a solid rotation piece on a championship team.

He struggled mightily with his control for a few years, but then something changed (perhaps revealed in future research, perhaps not) and he had excellent control for the rest of his career. He always gave up a lot of hits, including his fair share of homeruns, but he hedged his value with an above-average strikeout rate.

We have followed the arc of his historical career very closely, including a pattern (very common in his era) where high usage years are followed by recovery years. He should be among the league leaders in IP on his high usage years, and among the leaders in hits allowed those years as well.

I don’t see a lot changing in future revisions: perhaps he gives up a handful more hits and strikes out a few more batters.
