George Stovey

Easily the most challenging projection so far. George Stovey offers three things

  • An incredibly sparse historical record.
  • A reputation of being the best African-American pitcher of his generation.
  • A reputation of being very difficult as a human being.

The last can be, if not discarded, greatly reduced in scope: almost all of those reports trace back to a single press source.

But the other two are … very, very problematic for our project. Stovey clearly began pitching professionally in his late teens, so we’ve preserved that. But the rest … well. For now we’ve modeled Stovey (his real name, fwiw, was Stover, but he used Stovey professionally, so we’ve kept that as well) as a potentially great pitcher year after year which, for the years he was on the mound, meant a lot of innings, not a lot of hits, a decent strikeout rate.

Stovey is probably going to be one of the first players we pour a lot of time into as we move from draft to refined projections.
