Andrew Payne

Some projections have Andrew Payne (who went by the unfortunate nickname “Jap” in most sources) as a full time player for most of his career.

I just don’t see it.

I see Payne as a useful reserve OFer who had a predictable flow of performing well enough to earn additional playing time for a year or 2, then seeing his time reduced as his performance waned. This cycle happens twice in his career, with 1905 and 1906 being strong years and then 1910 through 1915. In the latter period, he could be a full time OFer on a bad team, or a key reserve on a good one.

He had a fair bit of power, especially for his time and I could see future revisions actually adding to his homerun output (which, by itself, might be enough to earn additional playing time, even if he struggled to hit above .220 for quite a few years).

He struck out a lot, and his walk rate was unremarkable.

Payne was solid in the OF with a mediocre arm. He had enough range to play CF, but was better suited for the corner OF spots, spending most of his career in RF.

We inserted a year in 1915, but other than that followed his historical record pretty closely.
