Walter Davis

Steel Arm Davis (not to be confused with a few pitchers with the same nickname) could rake. Just a solid staring OFer with a few All Star selections tossed in. He didn’t have a great eye, and struck out a little more often than you’d like, but bottom line, his 320/370/490 line across his career represents high value production.

He missed a few years, which we’ve filled in while resisting the temptation to extend his career, despite solid seasons in his late 30’s.

Future drafts may revise some of the components of his batting line–there is an argument that he should draw a handful more walks and that he should add more power (essentially trading out doubles for triples and homeruns), but the overall shape feels very, very solid.

A lot revolves around how you see 1927, a year where Davis was a borderline MVP contender. If that is a bit of a fluke, representing a level across the board he never reached again, you get a career much like we have projected. If, instead, you see that as the level he would have performed at from 1924-1926, you end up with a borderline HoF hitter–and an argument could be made for that being a more accurate projection.

No matter where he played, he wasn’t very good in the field, hence his shuttling around between LF, RF, and 1B.
