Bobby Winston was a solid OF option–not a star, but more than serviceable with a stretch from 1911 to 1914 that was quite good. His career was extended by a nice resurgence in his mid 30s, making him a useful option into his early 40s. His debut was a little late–Winston wasn’t a fulltime player until 1906, when he was 27. He had some speed, but the late start worked against him ever being a threat to the SB leaderboards.
Winston had a decent eye for the strike zone and hit a decent number of doubles, without much additional power. He was a solid LFer, not great when asked to play CF or RF, with his defensive value essentially coming from his range and sure hands given a relatively weak arm.
Winston was always–outside of his peaks in 1913 and 1914–on the fringe of being a starting OFer. He was clearly good enough to contribute, but not enough to force himself into the lineup on a better team. There are two points in Winston’s career where he might have played himself out of the league: first, he struggled a lot from 1908 to 1910; second, he was truly bad in 1915 and 1916. The challenge is whether his core skillset–speed, defense, decent OBP–was enough to keep him around. We think it was, and that his peak from 1911 to 1914 was enough to keep teams taking a chance on him despite his advanced age into the late teens.
In 1913, he has an outside shot of being on the H leaderboard but, aside from that, Winston’s playing time largely dictates his lack of grey ink in his career. Maybe he steals enough bases in 1907 to get there as well.
We followed Winston’s historical arc, with the exception of adding a year in 1918.
The basic shape of his career feels solid, although future revisions could change how his playing time is envisioned.
