Sam Strothers

Sam Strothers was a useful reserve C/1B for a few years, with a career that extended for too long past that point.

We’ve added a season in 1905 so his success in 1906 and 1907 doesn’t totally come out of nowhere, and then have respected the historical record with his career extending until 1916, despite it being quite plausible that he was out of the game any season from 1913 on.

He put the bat on the ball, and had what we would call “doubles power,” but with virtually no speed, rarely hit a triple (and never a homerun). His walk rates jumped around a bit, as did his strikeouts, more a function of him never getting 300 AB’s in a season. Overall, not much command of the strike zone and a few more strikeouts than league average.

He was a good catcher with an average arm early in his career and very poor behind the plate late in his playing days, and never good at 1B.

I like this projection for Strothers: there are always guys like this around who can give you a serviceable 200 AB’s and whose careers seem to drag on a few years too long before they drift away out of notice. They question is if Strothers’ career would survive his very poor showings in 1910 or 1913 to reach the absolute nadir of 1915.
