Clarence Lytle

Clarence Lytle, with the enviable nickname “Dude,” was a serviceable arm, but little more than that.

His debut as a 21 year old in 1901 was rough, and we have delayed his return to the big leagues until 1903. He’s unremarkable until 1906, when he puts it all together for a single, shining season followed by a few more useful seasons before his career ends in 1911.

Lytle was hard to hit, allowing less than a base knock per inning. But he had very little control, and rarely struck out many betters: your typical “let them hit it, hope our fielders help me out” style hurler.

Lytle’s value is very much tied to his usage: if he throws half the innings projected here in his better years, he ends up not doing much of note in his career. So while I think the shape of his performance–few hits, very few homeruns, far too many walks–is good here, I could see him being given fewer innings to show it.
