Ramón Govantes

Ramón Govantes was, at best, a decent extra OF with, perhaps, a couple of years as a starter. He put the ball in play, had a lot of speed, and played great defense at the corner OF spots.

All of that sounds great, but lurking behind it is a career with OPS’ stuck, after a strong debut, in the .500’s, which is borderline at best, even in the deadball era. Govantes hit well his first 2 seasons, but struggled greatly after that, never again reaching an OPS of .600 and falling below .500 a few times.

Govantes had a decent eye for the strike zone, but virtually no power. He did have some speed, and was a threat when he did get on base.

Chicho was essentially a utility player, logging time at all 9 positions, with most of it in LF, RF, 3B, and 2B. He was excellent in LF with great range and a strong arm and somewhat useful elsewhere.

Given his offensive struggles, it’s easy to see his career ending after 1907 or 1908, but we’ve kept his historical record. That includes a strong 1910, warranting the addition of a final year for Chicho in 1911.

If anything, I think future projections could reduce his playing time, which would have the effect of making his exit in 1908 even more likely. In the final analysis, Govantes was a brief, useful piece at the end of a roster, little more.
