Gus James was a useful utility / bat off the bench type.
His career is pretty generic–there are a lot of players who can hit for a bit of power, and see some limited opportunities for about a half-dozen years. He was a decent hitter, more for power than for average, but he didn’t draw many walks and struck out quite often.
Mix that with versatile–but not very good–defense, and you have someone useful at the end of the roster, but someone who should only see a few hundred plate appearances a season.
James saw more games at 2B and C than anywhere else, and while he was passable behind the plate, he was at best neutral and far more likely a liability with the glove.
We ignored James’ 1904 season, and have him playing from 1907 to 1912, which felt more accurate than inserting years before then. He was excellent in 1910, but we don’t see that translating into significant playing time: he was who he was.
