Bill Land

Career Batting:.254 BA .286 OBP .323 SLG. 1 HR. 2,957 PA.(1906-1914)

Bill Land was a marginal OF with a pretty extreme historical record.

He had a few excellent years (1908/1909 and 1912) and a few truly horrible years (1906, 1913). He also is missing years in 1907 and 1910. So, what to do?

We created a 1907 year that, while still below average, bridges to his solid performances in 1908 and 1909 and added as similarly slightly below average year in 1910. This reinforces a sense that Land was, overall, not terribly useful offensively, with a couple outlier years that drove his career.

He had occasional power (remember the era, so this means doubles and triples), poor strike zone control, and a tendency to strike out more than you you would like. Add to that underwhelming speed and you have … a fringe outfielder.

We have Land getting more playing time in his better years, which nudges his career slash line up a little, but he’s still only a full time player in one year (1909) with the two surrounding seasons being his only other years over 400 AB’s.

He was solid at the corner OF slots, but his lack of speed really hurt him when asked to play CF.

Future projections are likely to hinge around Land’s usage. He could be out of the game in 1911, but I do think that if he is effective in 1912, he would have at least one more year following that. That bottoms out to being happy with this set of projections as a representation of Land’s value.
