Lem Williams

Lem Williams was, at best, a fringe outfielder with a career that can serve as a study in just how far a couple good showings can take you in your career, in his case 1907 and 1911, and a swan song in his final year, 1914.

We’ve given Williams a couple years at the start of his career, and filled in the seasons around 1911, and what emerges is a player with some promise at the start of his career, a very useful peak season at age 27, and then a precipitous collapse, to the point where it would be perfectly reasonable to see him out of the game in 1909. But if he gets some playing time after that, he is marginally useful as a reserve OF from 1910 to 1914.

He drew a walk decently, struck out a bit, but genuinely couldn’t hit very well, even in his best years.

He was average defensively, performing well in the OF–even in CF–at the start of his career, then struggling at the corner OF spots and at 1B as he aged.

Future projections may remove Williams from the project entirely.
