Sam Mongin was, if anything, a borderline MLB talent and, more likely, a career AAA player.
He is included largely because the shape of his career does, if you squint, lend itself to his sticking around at the top level. He burst onto the scene with a magnificent debut that represented a level of offensive production he would never reach again, then managed to essentially alternate useful and useless years into the mid 1910s. So that could result in teams continuing to give him opportunities as a utility infielder, with his career ending anywhere between 1916 and 1921. We’ve extended it to 1921 more for fidelity than anything else–I think it more likely that 1918 or so is his last season.
He had a decent eye for the strike zone and occasional extra base power, but only hit over .250 four times over his career. He could steal the occasional base.
Mongin was OK defensively at 3B and above average at 2B, but played more at the hot corner than the middle infield.
This last is the area of most likely change in the projections: it is possible that Mongin was a far better fielder than this evaluation reflects and, with the greater skill defensively, would warrant more playing time. That would nudge his career towards someone like Mickey Doolin–and Doolin played 1700 games at MLB, finishing top 15 in the MVP voting twice despite a career 179/233/218 slash line.
Even without that, I would not be surprised if later iterations changed the projections of Mongin’s usage quite a bit in either direction; regardless, the overall level of borderline offensive skill should remain.
