Oliver Marcell

Career Batting:.299 BA .358 OBP .384 SLG. 48 HR. 7,559 PA.(1918-1930)

You’ll also see him referred to as “Ollie” and as “Marcelle.”

Marcell was an excellent 3B, although overshadowed by some of his peers. He was excellent defensively, and offered a nice offensive profile: very few strikeouts, some power, a few walks. Just an all-around contributor who easily could have been on championship teams and seen a few all star games himself.

Especially in his prime–1920 through 1927–Marcell was consistent year over year with only 1923 being a truly outstanding season. We have him eclipsing double digits in HRs once and in triples twice, and likely to be on the league leaderboards for hits a couple of times in that span.

His decline hit pretty hard, going from a very high level of performance in 1927 to barely replacement level for the next three years.

Marcell was almost exclusively a 3B, playing SS only a small handful of times early in his career and, while not the fielder that, say, Dave Malarcher was, could still flash the leather to good effect.

This projection of Marcell feels a little rough. I think the overall career numbers are quite solid, but I wonder about both whether his peak years (1920 and 1923) are a little too strong and his decline a little too steep.
