An elite fielder at the hot corner, Dave Malarcher was clearly suited to holding down a starting role throughout the 1920s. He had excellent control of the strike zone, and even in years where he didn’t hit a lick, got on base at a respectable rate, to the point of being in the conversation for the league lead in walks a few times. He had very, very little power.
He was an excellent base stealer, likely to spend a few seasons among the league leaders. That overstates his speed slightly, but he’s got the perfect profile to rack up steals in that (a) he was good at it and (b) he spent most of his time on the basepaths at 1B (many walks, little power).
Overall, a league average-ish offensive performer, whose value came largely from gold-glove level defense at 3B. Early in his career, he played a bit in the OF and throughout his career would fill in at 2B for a handful of games, but he was almost exclusively a 3B, and a great one at that.
His career could end anytime from 1928 on, with only his solid contributions in 1929 and 1931 keeping it going despite a very clear decline phase. But 1919 and 1923 to 1925 were truly elite seasons.
I like this projection a lot, and think it will remain pretty consistent through future revisions, although the walk rate may be a tad favorable.
