Wade Johnston

Career Batting:.300 BA .364 OBP .438 SLG. 95 HR. 6,658 PA.(1921-1933)

Wade Johnston could flat out hit. He was fast, bad defensively, and a bit reluctant to take a walk.

But he could rake, hitting for both average and power throughout his career, especially in 1928 and 1929, when he could find himself part of the MVP conversation. Those years are the most likely revision points in these projections, as it is possible the HR power was due to some extreme park effect a la Mel Ott, but I’ve left the projections as is for now–it is not unheard of for a player to have a couple strong HR years in their late 20s.

Johnston really fell off a cliff at the end of his career, and I would suspect an injury in 1932 as a key factor.

A clear MLB talent, and a valuable piece especially from 1925 through 1931.

He was decent as a pitcher for the first few years of his career, but we’ve omitted that as he clearly wasn’t really thought of as a 2-way player.
