Downs was fast, a good-to-excellent fielder across the infield, and couldn’t hit a lick.
He was one of those guys whose career got prolonged through timing more than anything else: he hit uncharacteristically well as a 20 year old rookie, then was a solid contributor from ages 23-25, earning him multiple chances to show those seasons were no fluke. But, they pretty much were.
As such, it seems just as likely he has the decade career we’ve projected as a utility player as he’s out of the game by the mid-1920’s.
He was an excellent 2B and 3B, but not as effective at SS–which is not totally unheard of for players of his somewhat diminutive stature.
