Ah, what might have been!
Sy “Bugs” Hayman had a fantastic first 2 years on the mound. And then he died, killed during the 1910 season in a traffic accident. As elsewhere, when external events intrude, we respect that, so we only have a little over 2 years in these projections for Hayman.
It’s a tantalizing glimpse: Hayman had decent control, didn’t give up a ton of hits, and ate up innings. Whether, as he aged, he would improve–moving him to a legitimate front of the rotation starter–or hold steady, leaving him as a solid contributor remains an open question that even we at i9s won’t answer. (Push come to shove, we lean to the latter–the hit rate is a little too high overall.)
