Grant is the first player we’ve hit that also has a significant minor league record, due to the four years he spent in the white minors, mostly with Buffalo. These years–in his early 20s–reinforce the fact that Grant was a spectacular hitter, a Rogers Hornsby type decades before Hornsby.
They also complicate the projections, as the minor league record doesn’t include walks. So, we’ve used his NeL performance to guide his walk rate, while drawing on all sources for the overall shape of his career.
SABR’s BioProject confirms that he began playing semi-professionally in 1884; we have given him a debut year of 1885, and filled in various gaps throughout his career.
Grant is the first all-time great the project encounters. He should score some black ink in his career, especially in 1891 and 1892. In 1897, he could lead the league in doubles, and 1894 and 1896 in homeruns.
