George Wright

George Wright was a solid utility infielder, perhaps a bit more than that for a few years.

He came up as a shortstop, then moved to 2B for the second half of his career. Throughout, he could put the bat on the ball with some power, but never produced enough at the plate to really warrant a starting position, especially when his defense–thoroughly mediocre–is factored into the equation.

Wright had a strong debut in 1905 followed by a few years of decline including a 1908 so poor it may have led to his exit from the game. But 1909 and especially 1911 were quite good, and we’ve even added a year in 1914, as his 1913 campaign seems too strong to be his final season.

Other than 1911, however, he was a fringe contributor, providing middle infield depth and the occasional hard hit ball. He rarely walked, struck out a lot, and was middling at best on the basepaths.

If anything, I think future revisions for Jess may have him fading out of the game or, at least, receiving less playing time than we have here, where he tops 400 PA’s four consecutive seasons. But the general skills on display feel right.
